Luxembourg is a tiny country that sits between the borders of Belgium, France, and Germany, making it an easy day trip from any of these destinations! We took a day trip here from Herentals, Belgium. Since I was going to Munich, Germany next, we drove to Luxembourg from Belgium (about a 2 hour drive from where we came from) and then flew out of the Luxembourg Airport to Munich. Flying out of Luxembourg was a dream... there was maybe 10 people on my flight and it was so cheap! Luxembourg is so small that it made it possible for us to visit some of the biggest tourist destinations in just a few hours. I didn't know much about this little country before coming here, but let me say I was thoroughly charmed! This is definitely a hidden gem in Europe. In this post I am going to talk about the 3 best cities (in my opinion) to visit during your day (or stay) in Luxembourg. Since we were coming from the west, we started with the most popular destination Vianden, where the stunning Vianden Castle is with the cutest town below. Then we stopped at Echternach on the way to Luxembourg City!
Fun Facts About Luxembourg
The name Luxembourg means "little fortress" or "little castle," named after the castle built when Luxembourg originated in 963. Luxembourg is a gorgeous country with amazing medieval towns and rich history. Luxembourg has the second highest GDP in the world and is a known sanctuary for tax breaks, which makes it no surprise that it has the highest number of European expats. Luxembourg is the last remaining Grand Duchy of the world with a Grand Duke as the head of state.
Vianden
Vianden is the coolest little medieval town in northern Luxembourg near the German border (we drove through Germany to get here). Vianden Castle is the most famous tourist destination in Luxembourg, and you definitely don't want to miss it! We took the chairlift up to the castle, but just be aware, this is just for fun and there is still a bit of a hike! I didn't mind, but if you are somebody with any physical ailments I would see if it is possible to have a driver drop you off right in front. If you take the chairlift, there is a restaurant and pub at the top of the hill, with the most STUNNING views overlooking the city. You can see Germany from here!
The hike to Vianden castle is beautiful, and just below it is the cutest town to walk around. The buildings are cute and colorful in the city around it, and the castle is magnificent. You can walk inside and around the castle by purchasing a ticket when you get there, or you can purchase your tickets online here for only 4 Euros per person. Vianden castle was built from the 10th to 14th century, and is rich in history. It is something you definitely don't want to miss!
Echternach
We stopped in Echternach on the way from Vianden to Luxembourg City and it was SO charming! It is the cutest medieval town with colorful buildings, little shops, churches, and restaurants. Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg and is a nice area with only less than 6,000 residents.

​If you watch my vlog, you will know I didn't quite make it to explore Luxembourg City because I had to catch my flight! We had so much fun exploring the other towns that we stayed longer than we thought. We started our day in Vianden around 2:00, but if you start your day early in the morning, you are guaranteed to see everything in a day.
